Lamont Carey, born in Washington, DC is a dynamic spokenword artist, entrepreneur, radio personality, author and filmmaker. His career in the arts ignited when he began performing as a spokenword artist in 2005, earning him an appearance on HBO’s “Def Poetry Jam” and B.E.T.’s “Lyric Café’.” He received the 2005 Poet of the Year award for his debut spokenword CD entitled “IMAGINE” (which includes his world renowned piece “I Can’t Read” ). Mr. Carey has been featured on various radio shows including Washington D.C.’s WHUR, WPGC, WPFW and Canada’s KCUA as well as the syndicated
“Michael Baisden Show” and “The Al Sharpton Show.”
In 2005, Mr. Carey formed the company LaCarey Entertainment, LLC, which has been instrumental in casting over 200 actors including himself on HBO’s critically acclaimed and Peabody Award winning drama series “The Wire.” Mr. Carey began hosting his own internet talk show “Da Lamont Carey Show” in 2007, a show for and about its listeners. His book “Why I Keep U A Secret” was released in 2007 and is a bestseller among women at many of Mr. Carey’s speaking engagements.
In 2010, Mr. Carey embarked upon his career as a playwright and producer with the debut of his play “Learning to be a Mommy” at the famous John F. Kennedy Center’s “Terrace Theatre” in Washington, D.C. He is currently working on a TV series “Laws of the Street,” which is an adaptation of the play. In addition to the TV series, Mr. Carey is also producing and directing a powerful documentary detailing the successful transition of four ex-offenders; a story with personal meaning to Mr. Carey.
An avid advocate for former and current incarcerated persons, Mr. Carey developed “The Street Keeps Calling Me” Tour through his non-profit CONTACT VISITS an outreach program providing successfully transitioned ex-offenders as motivational speakers and performers to those who are currently incarcerated in various criminal justice facilities.
Lastly, Mr. Carey along with many NFL and NBA players participated in a nationwide tour with CityAces, which addressed the importance of an education to inner-city students around the U.S.A
